ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – Lady Topper basketball legend Kim Pehkle (1989-1992) and former Hilltopper basketball assistant coach Dwane Casey (1981, 1983-86) were inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 22 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky at the Historic State Theater. Pehlke and Casey were part of the 12-member 2024 Class of Inductees.
Pehlke was a standout player at Doss High School in Louisville. She led Doss to a KHSAA Sweet 16 Championship Game appearance in 1987, ending the season with a 33-3 record overall. She was named to the All-State Tournament that season and was named to the Courier Journal All-State Team in 1987 and 1988. Also in 1988, Pehlke earned the highest individual basketball honor in the Bluegrass when she was named Kentucky's Miss Basketball. As a senior, Pehlke averaged 26.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game.
Pehlke's basketball success continued at WKU where she led the Lady Toppers to a championship game appearance in the 1992 NCAA Tournament, falling to Stanford in the final. She was the NCAA Mideast Regional Most Outstanding Player and the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player that season. Pehlke was a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team member (1991, 1992).
Pehlke finished her WKU career with 1,487 points. She held the school record for made 3-pointers when she departed in 1992 and is still fourth on the list today. She still holds the school record for best 3-point career shooting percentage, making 41.6 percent of shots from beyond the arc during her time on The Hill.
Casey was a three-year letter winner in basketball at Union County High School. He was named to the All-District and All-Region teams and earned Courier Journal All-State Team honors in 1975. After completing his playing career at the University of Kentucky, Casey became an assistant coach at WKU before going on to coach at Kentucky and in the NBA as head coach of the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors, where he was selected as the NBA Coach of the Year.
