BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis junior Sofia Blanco has been named Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, presented by Blenders Eyewear, the league announced Wednesday.
The Caracas, Venezuela, native continued her hot start to the year on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Eastern Illinois' Aleyla Wooten in No. 3 singles. The win was Blanco's fifth straight and improved her singles record to an impressive 11-1 on the season.
"Very happy to see that Sofia has been honored for her work this season," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. "Her consistency and her ability to compete match in and match out has been a true positive for the team this year."
Blanco's individual success has helped WKU to a five-match winning streak – the Lady Toppers have taken down Wyoming, UIC, Belmont, IUPUI, and EIU during the stretch. WKU is now 7-1 at home and 8-5 overall this spring.
The honor marks the first CUSA Athlete of the Week award of the season for the Lady Toppers and the first since Rachel Hermanova received the recognition on Jan. 25, 2023.
WKU will head to Dayton for its next match, which is scheduled to be played at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 16.
