RUSTON, La. — A cold shooting night doomed WKU women's basketball (15-14, 6-8 CUSA) in a 45-41 road loss at Louisiana Tech (12-17, 6-8 CUSA) on Wednesday night in Ruston, Louisiana.
Karris Allen and Destiny Salary each had eight points to lead the Lady Toppers in scoring. Allen also had eight rebounds and a season high four assists. Freshman Caitlin Staley had a career high eight boards along with four points.
WKU struggled to score in the game, shooting a season low 26.2 percent from the field.
The Lady Techsters opened the game on a 6-0 run behind two 3-pointers. Caitlin Staley scored WKU's first basket at the 7:44 mark. LA Tech was up seven when WKU went on a 6-0 run of their own to get back within one. Four of those six points came from Karris Allen. The Lady Toppers went into the second quarter down, 13-10.
Mead connected on a three to open the second quarter to tie the score. After a LA Tech basket, Mead once again tied the score with a bucket on the other end. The Lady Techsters scored six straight points, but WKU rattled off a 6-0 run to end the quarter tied at 21-all.
Teresa Faustino made a three to start the second half and to give WKU its first lead of the game. The two teams went back and forth but starting at the 6:50 mark WKU outscored LA Tech 13-5 to take a 39-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
LA Tech started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the Lady Topper lead down to one. Allen made a layup with 3:53 left in the game to put WKU back ahead by three, but the Lady Techsters finished the game on a 7-0 run, six of those points coming from the free throw line. WKU went ice cold in the fourth quarter, going 1-of-16 from the field.
The Lady Toppers will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. against FIU in E.A. Diddle Arena.
