MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – WKU Women's Tennis was back in action Saturday in the MTSU Invitational at the Adams Tennis Complex, and the Lady Toppers carried over the strong play they exhibited in Friday's opening matches early in the second day.
WKU won six of its seven singles matches against Middle Tennessee and Tennessee State in Saturday's 9 a.m. time slot, and followed with three doubles wins in as many matches in the 12:30 p.m. time slot against TSU. The Lady Toppers closed the day with singles matches against Lipscomb, winning three of those matches.
"Saturday we played very well in doubles," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "We played extremely well in singles against MTSU, but we were unable to show the same consistency in our last singles match against Lipscomb. Sofia (Blanco), Samantha (Martinez), and Mariana (Zegada) showed tremendous heart coming back to win against Lipscomb in the third set."
In the 9 a.m. singles matches, Paola Cortez won against MTSU's Lena Peyer 6-2, 6-4. Rachel Hermanova defeated MTSU's Lilly-Sophie Schmidt 6-2, 6-2. Anna-Marie Kopecka won her match against MTSU's Hrudaya Shah 6-3, 6-2. Blanco won against MTSU's Eloise Swarbrick 6-0, 6-2. Zegada defeated TSU's Natalie Walsh 6-1, 6-0, and Martinez won against TSU's Taylor Ellis 6-0, 6-0. Sayda Hernandez dropped her match to MTSU's Sana Garakani 6-2, 6-0.
WKU swept its three doubles matches on the day against TSU. The duo of Cortez and Kopecka took down Warona Mdlulwa and Daniela Koleva 6-0, Blanco and Martinez won against Jovana Nikolic and Louise Ratiu 6-3, and Hermanova and Zegada topped Aroa Castillo and Fran Gomez-Weiss 6-1.
The Lady Toppers battled to three wins in eight singles matches against Lipscomb to close action for the day. Blanco won her match against Deborah Dominguez 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, Zegada defeated Alina Cherniaieva 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, and Martinez won her match against Anja Trbeznik 6-4, 0-6, 10-8. Lipscomb's Sasha Dobranos defeated Cortez 6-2, 6-4, Rut Galiudo defeated Hermanova 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, Mariya Dolzhenko defeated Hernandez 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), Sofiia Paladi defeated Kopecka 6-3, 6-2, and Sonia Pieczynska defeated Damera 6-2, 6-7 (4), 13-11.
WKU is scheduled to wrap up the weekend with singles matches against Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT, and the Lady Toppers will follow with doubles matches against Middle Tennessee.
