BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — A pair of WKU Soccer student-athletes earned Conference USA weekly awards for their play against Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston last week. Ambere Barnett was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week and Maddie Davis earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
It is the third weekly award of Barnett's career, but the first defensive award. Barnett made the switch to the backline five matches into the 2023 season. Since her repositioning, WKU has given up just five goals in 11 matches, which includes seven shutouts. The sixth year player scored her second goal of the season against Louisiana Tech, leading WKU to a crucial 1-0 win against the Bulldogs. Barnett has 20 career goals at WKU, which is the ninth most all-time for a Lady Topper. Her six career game-winning goals is tied for the eighth most in program history as well.
Davis had a stellar week with a pair of clean sheets against LA Tech and Sam Houston. Against the Bulldogs, Davis had five saves including a clutch stop on a LA Tech penalty kick to preserve the shutout. Davis has seven clean sheets on the season, which is the second most in CUSA and the 26th most in the country. Her 0.929 goals against average is the third best mark in the league. The weekly award is the first of Davis' career.
WKU secured their place in the CUSA tournament with the wins last week. The Lady Toppers can finish no lower than fifth in the standings and can finish as high as first with two matches left to play this season. With 11 points in conference play currently, WKU sits in fourth place in the standings.
The Lady Toppers (5-3-7, 3-1-2 CUSA) will go on the road this week with a match at Liberty (13-1-1, 4-1-1 CUSA) on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. WKU will close out the regular season at home against New Mexico State (8-5-2, 5-0-1 CUSA) on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
