BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football held its inaugural Football Alumni Spring BBQ Banquet on Saturday in conjunction with its annual Spring Game, honoring several student-athletes at the event hosted and organized by the WKU Football Alumni Council.
Three ongoing awards were presented to members of the football team, while the Hilltoppers also honored their most valuable players from spring practice in each phase of the game.
Rising redshirt senior defensive end Juwuan Jones was the recipient of the Al Almond Award, which has been given since 1968 to a Hilltopper player who displays devotion to character, loyalty, ability and love of fellow man.
Rising sophomore running back Kye Robichaux earned the Jimbo DeVries Outstanding Walk-On Award, which has been presented since 2008. Robichaux was informed by head coach Tyson Helton after receiving his award that he has been put on scholarship.
A new award – the Darryl Drake Award – was also presented for the first time in honor of a player who has displayed remarkable perseverance. That award was given to rising redshirt junior running back Jakairi Moses.
Additionally, WKU honored its most valuable players from spring practice.
Redshirt sophomore receiver Dalvin Smith was named Offensive MVP from the spring, while redshirt senior defensive tackle Brodric Martin was selected as Defensive MVP. Redshirt senior receiver Daewood Davis earned MVP honors for special teams.
Tim Ford, a WKU Football All-Century Team member and the university's 2020 Philanthropist of the Year, was named WKU Football Alumni of the Year in addition to taking over as President of the WKU Football Alumni Council.
