BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For the first time in three years, WKU Soccer was able to complete a spring season.
"Due to the pandemic, most players in our program had never experienced a normal spring season," said head coach Jason Neidell. "It was a pure joy to get out on the field with our team and teach and grow within the game. Our players took monumental steps in their development, and we are excited about the foundation built both on and off the field. We are eager to get back at it this fall and see how that translates into our competitive season."
The 2020 spring season had just begun when the COVID-19 pandemic forced everything into a pause and the 2020 fall schedule was pushed back to the spring of 2021, keeping the Lady Toppers from that developmental time once again.
The Lady Toppers competed in two 7v7 tournaments and six full-sided matches through February, March and April. WKU went 4-0-2 in the full-sided matches, scoring eight goals from seven goal scorers. Matches were played against UT Martin, Murray State, Tennessee Tech, Alabama-Huntsville, Southern Indiana and Cumberlands. The Lady Toppers hosted a 7v7 tournament and played in another at Illinois.
Lily Rummo led WKU in scoring in 7v7 tournaments, netting seven goals, while Kayla Meyer had six and Sydney Ernst had four. Meyer and Ernst also had four assists each during the tournaments.
In full matches, Meyer, Ellie Belcher, Brooke Sleeva, Aspen Seaich, Jordan Strauss and Ambere Barnett each had one goal and Anna Isger had two. Seaich was the leading assist earner in full matches, notching three throughout the spring season.
Goalkeepers Alexis Bach, Ashley Kobylinski, Afton Schraml and Maddie Davis split time in net throughout the spring. Bach posted two full-sided shutouts.
