Lady Toppers Close Out Fall Competition at Bellarmine Invite

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WKU Tennis finished up fall play over the weekend at the Bellarmine Invitational.

On Saturday, doubles began at 9 a.m. CT with singles competition following at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Samantha Martinez and Sofia Blanco got the only doubles win on the day for the Lady Toppers beating a team from EKU, 7-6.

In singles, the 10 a.m. session saw five Hilltoppers get wins.

Paola Cortez won at the No. 1 spot in straight sets. Sayda Hernandez won a third-set tiebreaker. Blanco received the victory due to an injury to her opponent. Sunskrithi Damera beat an EKU player in straight sets and Samantha Martinez beat her opponent from Indiana Tech in straight sets.

Three Lady Toppers won in the 12:30 slate. Hernandez won in straight sets, Hermanova won a third set tiebreaker, as well as Damera who got her second victory of the day.

At 2 p.m., Mariana Zegada and Samantha Martinez were the only WKU players to suit up. Both defeated Indiana Tech players in straight sets.

On Sunday, two doubles pairs got wins. Cortez and Hernandez defeated an Indiana Tech team, 6-4 and Hermanova and Damera beat another Indiana Tech team, 6-1.

In singles play, WKU did not lose a match and only lost two sets on the day.

Zegada, Martinez, Blanco, Damera and Hermanova all won in straight sets, while Hernandez and Cortez won each of their third-set tiebreakers.

"I thought we played well this weekend, at times," head coach Greg Davis said. "Our singles certainly was tremendous yesterday, winning all seven singles matches. I think our focus right now is on our conditioning and improving our doubles by the time January comes around."

The Lady Toppers will begin the regular season next year in January 2023.
