The year of 2020..  Â
When I wrote down my new year's resolution, I would've never expected all the things that have occurred. There is no way I could've planned or been ready for the things that have happened in this short 6 months. And yet, I still don't know how to handle it. 2020, the year of uncertainty.Â
During uncertain times I believe it is important to have a community that supports you and helps you get through it. They help assure you that they have your back. They uplift. They encourage. They understand. They're there, in it with you. That is what my family, teammates, and coaches have done and are doing for me. We are all in this together.Â
Not only do we have to deal with COVID-19, we also are dealing with another plague that has been around forever. The plague of racism and police brutality. It is a tough subject that is uncomfortable to some, but it must be acknowledged. It is heartbreaking that the color of one's skin determines the quality of treatment they receive. When it comes down to it, the color of our skin is the only thing that separates us. Everything on the inside is the same. Why does the outer appearance matter? That is one of the many questions I ask myself.Â
How do we fix it? An answer that we so desperately need. Let's start with the heart. Let's all soften our hearts. Become aware of the challenges our brothers and sisters face every single day. I challenge Hilltopper Nation to reach out and learn someone else's story that doesn't look exactly like them. Just because it does not directly affect you doesn't mean a problem isn't there.Â
