BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team will open play in the Conference USA Tournament as the No. 3 seed on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Frisco, Texas against the winner of No. 6 seed Charlotte and No. 11 seed North Texas. All games in the tournament will be played at the Ford Center at the Star.
WKU's quarterfinals matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Lady Toppers have won 12 of their last 14 games and own a 22-7 overall record. WKU finished regular season conference play with a 14-4 record to tie for second place in the league standings with Old Dominion. The Monarchs held the head-to-head tiebreaker to earn the No. 2 seed. The Lady Toppers also hold a No. 28 RPI ranking heading into the postseason.
A pair of Lady Toppers earned All-Conference honors, as announced by the conference earlier in the week. Raneem Elgedawy and Dee Givens were tabbed C-USA All-Conference First Team and Givens also earned C-USA All-Defensive accolades.
WKU has a 10-2 record in the C-USA Tournament all-time, winning the championship three times in only five seasons as a member. Since 1983, the Lady Toppers are 69-24 in conference tournaments and 30-4 in quarterfinals. WKU is 4-0 in conference tournaments against Charlotte and 5-1 against North Texas.
Three Lady Toppers are averaging double-digit points. Elgedawy is averaging a double-double with 17.6 points per game (third in C-USA) and 11.0 (second in C-USA) rebounds per game. Givens is putting up 16.2 points per game (fifth in C-USA) and Whitney Creech is scoring 13.7 points per game(11th in C-USA). Creech is also the team's assists-leader, averaging 4.7 per game (second in C-USA).
WKU leads C-USA in scoring this season, pouring in 74.1 points per game. That mark is the 27th highest in the nation. The Lady Toppers also lead the league in steals, averaging 10.2 takeaways per game.
Head coach Greg Collins has put an emphasis on rebounding this season and the Lady Toppers lead the conference in offensive rebounds with a 15.1 average. WKU also holds opponents to an average of 34.4 rebounds per game, the second lowest average in the league. This season, WKU is 17-0 when outrebounding opponents.
The Lady Toppers have faced Charlotte twice already this season, including a matchup in Bowling Green just a week ago. WKU defeated the 49ers in both contests (60-56 in Charlotte and 71-60 in Bowling Green). The Lady Toppers own a 20-5 record against Charlotte all-time and have won five-straight in the season.
WKU and North Texas squared off in Denton, Texas on Jan. 2 in the first conference game of the season. The Mean Green came away with a 61-54 win, giving WKU one of its seven losses. North Texas made 10 3-pointers in that game and outrebounded the Lady Toppers 53-39.
If the Lady Toppers advance, they'll play in the semifinals on Friday at 8:30 p.m. facing the winner of No. 2 Old Dominion and No. 7 UTEP/No. 10 Florida Atlantic.
