Interception Highlight
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Against No. 10/11 BYU this past Saturday, senior cornerback Dionté Ruffin stepped up to the challenge of facing a Heisman hopeful and one of the best wide receiving corps in the country.
The Kenner, La., native recorded his first career interception on Saturday night, breaking BYU quarterback Zach Wilson's all-time program-record streak of 184 consecutive passes without an interception. Ruffin returned the interception for 28 yards, deep into the red zone leading to a touchdown on the following play for the first points scored on BYU off a turnover this season.
In his post-game interview, Ruffin explained the mentality he and the defense kept throughout the game: "When things aren't going our way, we go to the sideline and we tell each other: 'Just keep playing, it's all gonna come together.' Even when we're down 30 points we just gotta keep the brotherhood together and keep going."
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake gave credit to the WKU defense saying, "Western Kentucky is tough. They do a lot of things differently and they're aggressive."
Ruffin played all 69 defensive snaps against the Cougars and allowed only one reception for six yards on seven targets against him, lining up against the likes of star wide receivers Dax Milne and Gunner Romney.
A starter for 20 straight games, Ruffin leads the team with seven pass breakups this season. Ruffin has played in 43 games for the Hilltoppers in his career, recording 69 total tackles and 20 pass breakups.
WKU travels to Boca Raton next to take on Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Nov. 7 for a 5 p.m. CT kickoff.
