Game 4 vs. UAB Notes (PDF)
Head Coach TYSON HELTON (Full Video)
Opening statement:
"Big conference game coming up this week against UAB, the guys are really excited about it. UAB is a really good football team, they won the conference last year and really they haven't lost a step. They lost several players - graduating or guys moving on - but the guys who have replaced them are very good players as well, they're 3-0. But our guys are really excited to get our first conference home game. It will be a great atmosphere, ought to be a great game, really looking forward to that."
On what the team accomplished during the bye week:
"I thought we got a lot done in the bye week, really was able to evaluate the quarterbacks - which needed to be done - and I thought they did a good job. Was able to get a jump-start on UAB, which we really needed. Defensively we were able to reevaluate some things, maybe tweak some things defensively. So yeah, we got a lot out of the bye week. The biggest thing we got out of it was the recruiting side of it. Our guys were able to get out Thursday, Friday and some Saturday to go out there and see recruits, and we had a big staff meeting today and went over recruiting and really liked what we were able to accomplish last week."
On playing a home game for the first time since August 29:
"I'm looking forward to it, to be honest with you. I love playing at home - I always have - I feel very comfortable here, I feel like our guys will be as well. I can't imagine a better atmosphere for a good, quality Conference USA opponent in UAB. There's a lot to be proved out there, they're a 3-0 team - which is great, you want to play a good football team - and we're 1-0 in conference, we want to keep that going and be 2-0 in conference. So it's building throughout the week, but our guys are in great spirits and they're excited. Even after we came back, we practiced Sunday - got an extra practice in - they were flying around and I could tell they're excited about being back at home."
On UAB's strengths and some keys to the game for WKU:
"I think their front four really controls the line of scrimmage well. I think their D-line does a great job in the run game and in the pass rush. They're able to rush four and play coverage, so that gives them an advantage; they're able to get pressure on the quarterback without having to blitz, so they're able to get extra guys in coverage. So, we'll have to do a great job with our offensive line, be sound in pass protection and in the run game to give our guys the opportunities to make plays. All games are usually won in the trenches in some form or fashion, so we're going to have to control the line of scrimmage there."
