LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Across the final week of June, incoming WKU Volleyball freshman Lauren Matthews competed at the AAU Junior National Girls' Volleyball Championships in Orlando, Fla., and earned a spot on 18 Open All-American Team for her efforts. A middle hitter on the Asics Team Indiana Elite 18-1 club, Matthews was one of 14 honorees from the top AAU division.
Matthews was accompanied on the All-American Team by one of her teammates with representatives from eight different clubs selected.
Action opened on June 25 and ran through June 28 for the Indiana-based club that claimed third place in the 18 Open division. In total, 20 teams competed in the division hailing from across the United States and Peru. Matthews' club advanced to the division's final four after multiple rounds of group play. The Asics Team Indiana squad ultimately dropped a three-set decision to the eventual champions in the semifinals.
Joining Matthews on the Asics Team Indiana club squad was fellow WKU Volleyball incoming freshman, Katie Isenbarger. Both Indiana natives are on the Lady Topper roster as middle hitters and are set to arrive on The Hill in mid-July to start training with the rest of the squad.
