Tigers Defeat Lady Toppers in Regular Season Finale at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - WKU dropped its regular season finale 6-1 at Memphis on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Toppers will finish the regular season 8-7 and 2-2 in Conference USA play.

Action began at 1 p.m. as the Lady Toppers and Tigers took to the courts in their doubles pairs. First to finish was senior duo Violetta Shatalova and Elpida Malamou who lost their match 6-0. Freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen were taken down by a pair of Tigers 6-4 and Memphis clinched the doubles point.

Sophomore tandem Cindy Oest and Natalia De Ugarte went on to defeat Memphis in a tough match on court three 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 8-6.

Singles play began and Malinen was the first to finish, defeated by a Tiger 6-2, 6-1. Fukushima, Japan native, Ito, was the next to complete her match, winning in the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-2. Malamou was defeated in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. De Ugarte fell to a Memphis representative 6-0, 7-5 and the Tigers claimed the win.

The remaining Lady Toppers each took their matches to three sets like Malamou. Shatalova was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 and Oest fell to a Tiger 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Up next, the Lady Toppers will head to the Conference USA Tournament hosted in Norfolk, Va.
