FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — The Wuerffel Trophy, known as college football's premier award for community service, has announced WKU Football senior Julien Lewis as a 2018 Nominee.
The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS student-athlete who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The Wuerffel Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
Lewis, a defensive lineman from Madison, Ala., has played in a team-high 34-consecutive games for the Hilltoppers dating back to the beginning of the 2016 campaign. For his career, he has recorded 51 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss, and has blocked a kick in three straight seasons.
In the classroom, Lewis has earned a bachelor's degree in Sport Management, finishing with a 3.17 GPA. He currently boasts a 4.0 GPA as he pursues a graduate degree in Recreation and Sport Administration, with a concentration in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration. He is a two-time WKU President's List, two-time C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
In the community, Lewis takes advantage of any and every opportunity to serve the local Bowling Green area. He is actively involved with mentoring high school students at the Lighthouse Academy Alternative School and enjoys spending time with the Special Olympics community in Bowling Green in their wheelchair basketball program and flag football games.
Lewis was recognized as the Male Athlete Community Outreach Award recipient at the inaugural TOPSY Awards in April. He is also an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at WKU.
A total of 103 nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy were made by the respective university Sports Information departments and closed on Oct. 12, 2018. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 1, 2018, and finalists announced on Nov. 19, 2018. The formal announcement of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 4, 2018, at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City.
