TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – WKU Tennis fell just shy of a victory at Alabama on Sunday afternoon after tying in the singles competition 3-3 but being defeated on the doubles point. The final score of the match was 4-3.
Play began Sunday with doubles action when sophomores Cindy Oest and Natalia De Ugarte paired up on court three to take on Smith Hinton and Jacqueline Pelletier of Alabama. On court two, seniors Elpida Malamou and Violetta Shatalova faced off against Andie Daniell and Kylie Moulin. Both WKU pairs were defeated by Alabama 6-2.
In the singles round of competition, a member of the Alabama squad first defeated Oest with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Monica Malinen pulled out the first victory of the day for the Lady Toppers, defeating Alabama's Moulin in a 6-4, 6-2 battle.
Greece native Malamou competed against No. 106 Daniell and fell in a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker in the first set before being defeated in the second set 6-1.
Shatalova was able to score another singles point for WKU with a win over an Alabama representative with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Pelletier of Alabama defeated De Ugarte 6-4, 6-3 sealing the Tide victory.
The match was completed when freshman Moka Ito defeated Hinton of Alabama in a three-set match with a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
"We played well in some spots and in a few others we played well until we had to execute," head coach Jonatan Berhane said. "We were right there with Alabama and if we had a little more luck on deciding points and executed well on key points, I think this match would've gone our way. We need these kinds of matches and we will keep getting better the further we get into our season."
Next up the Lady Toppers will compete in a double-header in Louisville this weekend playing UTEP first on Friday followed by Louisville on Saturday.
