BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Maverick Darling has been hired as an assistant coach for both the WKU Track & Field and Cross Country programs WKU head coach Erik Jenkins announced Tuesday. Darling will help lead the Hilltoppers' distance programs and brings a resume full of collegiate and professional achievements to The Hill.
"Maverick comes to the WKU as a highly decorated athlete at both the collegiate and professional level," Coach Jenkins shared. "He has been groomed in one of the most successful distance programs in the country and mentored by some of the best coaches in the NCAA system. I look forward to helping him lead our distance program."
"I would like to thank Coach Jenkins for this great opportunity to assist in the coaching of Western Kentucky University's distance programs," Darling said of his new position. "Coach Jenkins has laid down a very successful foundation at WKU and I am thrilled to become a part of this accomplished program."
Darling was a five-time All-American at Wisconsin where he served the past two seasons as the Badgers' volunteer assistant cross country and track & field coach. As an assistant in Madison, Wis., Darling helped the men's cross country program to the 2016 Big Ten title, NCAA Great Lakes Regional crown and an eighth place team finish at the NCAA Championships.
As a student-athlete, the Ovid, Mich., native helped UW win its fifth NCAA men's cross country title in 2011 as well as four Big Ten championships. Darling was tabbed the 2009 Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year and earned two All-America nods in the sport. His top NCAA individual finish came when Darling finished 11th overall at the NCAA Championships in 2012.
On the track, Darling was a three-time All-American as he capped off his career racing for the Cardinal and White with a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He also won the 10,000 meters his senior year at the 2013 Big Ten championships and earned All-America honors in the indoor 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Following his time as a student-athlete prior to joining the Wisconsin coaching staff, Darling ran professionally across the international stage.
