LEXINGTON, Ky. – WKU Volleyball has been recognized as one of only 25 Division I programs to earn a spot on the Academic Honor Roll, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Monday. In addition, with a cumulative GPA of 3.61, the Lady Toppers were recognized with an AVCA Team Academic Award for the 11th-consecutive season and the 15th time since 1999.
WKU is the only Division I program to earn top-25 academic honors and finish in the top-25 (or receive votes) in the final AVCA Coaches Poll of the 2016 campaign, when the Lady Toppers secured their third-straight Conference USA regular season and tournament titles in addition to making the program's 10th NCAA Tournament appearance.
"I could not be more proud of the performance of our student athletes in the classroom," head coach Travis Hudson said of the AVCA recognition. "To be recognized in the top-25 of the country last season and then to go and back that up with one of the top-25 GPAs is a testament to the complete student-athletes that we have in our program."
With 2016-2017 marking the 25th anniversary of the award, the AVCA has introduced additional honors to schools that have a minimum Team Academic Award streak of 15 years, and also for schools that scored the highest GPAs in their respective divisions. In total, 145 Division I teams were honored with WKU representing one of seven Conference USA programs on the list including: Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Rice, UAB, North Texas, and UTEP in addition to the Red and White.
An all-time high 822 high school and collegiate programs were recognized with the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season. The award is given to teams that hold an average 3.30 cumulative team GPA during the academic year on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
