John Mackey Award Site
NEW YORK, N.Y. — For the second time this season, senior tight end Deon Yelder has been named John Mackey Tight End of the Week honorable mention. Yelder had six receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a one-yard touchdown rush from a jumbo goal line package.
Oklahoma's Mark Andrews was named John Mackey Tight End of the Week with six catches for 79 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown. Penn State's Mike Gesicki joined Yelder as the other honorable mention candidate with six receptions for 57 yards.
Of his six catches vs. Florida Atlantic, five went for first downs and one was a 12-yard score in the second quarter. On the season, Yelder leads WKU in all three receiving categories with 33 receptions for 399 yards and four touchdowns.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. The John Mackey Award is a member of the NCFAA which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 23 awards boast over 745 years of tradition-selection excellence.
IN ADDITION... Yelder was named to the PFF College National Team of the Week at the tight end position with a rating of 92.8. It tied for the highest grade among the 12 players on the squad with SMU quarterback Ben Hicks. The Louisville native became the first Hilltopper to appear on a PFF College National Team of the Week so far this season.
The Hilltoppers (5-3) travel to Vanderbilt (3-5) on Nov. 4 for a matchup against the Commodores with the first kick at 11 a.m. For fans unable to make the trip to Nashville, the game will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
