IRVING, Texas – For the third time this season, WKU's Alyssa Cavanaugh has earned Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday. Cavanaugh racked up 39 weekend kills as the Lady Toppers swept UTEP and UTSA to extend their winning streak to 19 matches.
Firing off 6.50 kills per set, Cavanaugh notched seven or more kills in all but two weekend frames of play. The senior outside hitter got things going Friday night with a 19-kill, zero-error outing against UTEP, for a match-high .655 hitting clip. The Louisville, Ky., native also added two digs, a solo block and an assist on a Jessica Lucas kill. Cavanaugh stayed hot for Sunday's match, hitting the 20-kill plateau for the fourth time of the season. She also added three digs, a block assist and a service ace in the win.
Cavanaugh put up an average of 6.92 points per set between her 6.50 kills per set, 0.33 blocks per set and 0.17 aces per set. Posting 41.5 total points on the weekend, Cavanaugh worked efficiently, recording a .545 hitting clip while doing a little bit of everything.
With the week nine accolade, WKU Volleyball has now seen a student-athlete honored each of the last eight weeks of award distribution. In total, the Lady Toppers have now collected 13 volleyball honors this season, the most in the league.
WKU Volleyball has now won 28-consecutive sets and 19-straight matches to date. In Conference USA, the Lady Toppers have claimed their last 34 meetings with league foes and when playing a conference opponent at home, the Red and White have won 50-straight contests dating back to 2011. Additionally, WKU leads the nation with 18 matches swept on the 2017 season.
