BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Playing its next five games at home, WKU (11-8, 0-3 C-USA) will return to the friendly confines of Nick Denes Field for the longest homestand of the year, starting with a midweek game against Austin Peay (9-9, 3-3 OVC) at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
The Hilltoppers have won eight of the last 10 match ups against the Governors and lead the overall series 96-57-1, while holding a 50-23-1 mark at home. The contest will be shown live on WKUSports.tv as part of the broadcasting package, and fans can listen locally in Bowling Green on 1450 AM or 102.7 FM and online at WKUSports.tv.
WKU has been impressive in midweek action over the last couple years, winning 12 of its last 14 games that were played in the middle of the week, including a pair of triumphs over Austin Peay in 2015. So far this season, the Hilltoppers have won all four midweek contests and have outscored their opponents 36-10 in those games.
After losing top hitters from the 2015 squad in Anderson Miller and Philip Diedrick to the MLB Draft and Ryan Church as a senior, WKU has had no problem replacing the bats in the lineup this year. As a team, the Hilltoppers rank among Conference USA's best in multiple offensive categories: second in batting average (.312), runs (135) and hits (215), and third in slugging percentage (.414) and on-base percentage (.403).
Senior third baseman Danny Hudzina is one of five regular starters for the Hilltoppers batting over .300 as he leads C-USA with an impressive .470 clip. The mark is good for fourth in the nation, while he is also tied for the NCAA lead in hits with 39 and on a 24-game hitting streak. Sophomore Kaleb Duckworth has followed Hudzina nicely in the cleanup spot, swinging with a .387 average from the plate to go along with 17 RBI and 16 runs.
Right-handed pitcher Cody Coll will get the ball for the Tops, which will be his fifth start on the mound this season. Coll currently has a 4.11 ERA and has not drawn a decision. The Govs will also utilize a righty on the mound in Caleb Powell, who has a 1-1 record to go along with a 4.50 ERA.
Austin Peay enters the midweek affair as one of the best hitting teams in the country as well, tying for fourth in the NCAA in home runs (27) and in the Top 50 for team batting average (.304). Junior infielder Logan Gray was one of two players selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Year, while the Governors were tipped to finish third.
Following the midweek fixture, WKU will host longtime rival Middle Tennessee for a three-game conference series starting on Thursday, March 24, at 6 p.m. CT.
