BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU opened their 2016 spring football season on Monday under blue skies on the turf of Feix Field insides Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith.
It was the first of 15 scheduled practices for the Hilltoppers who are looking to generate competition for a number of positions as WKU returns seven starters on offense and four on defense.
"I thought the first day went pretty good," said head coach Jeff Brohm. "We've got some guys who want to do well, be good players and find a way to help this team win. We definitely have a long way to go. We have guys who need repetitions and experience."
One of those positions is obvious – quarterback. One of four quarterbacks on the field Monday will have the inside track to the starting job when WKU kicks off 2016 against Rice at home on September 3, but Brohm and his coaching staff have a long way to go before deciding who that starter will be.
"I like (our quarterbacks)," Brohm added. "They all want to be the guy. You have to remember, we had a quarterback who played very well at a high level. Even he went through some trials and tribulations. We've got a long way to go. We have to get as many reps as we can because these guys have been standing back for a long time. We haven't had another guy play in two and a half years. So, we've got a lot of work to do."
The Hilltoppers will practice from approximately 4-6 p.m., for every weekday practice and will hold one Saturday practice, April 9th which will begin at 10 a.m.
Spring practice concludes with the annual Red and White Game, set for April 23 at 1 p.m., inside Houchens-Smith Stadium. Admission and parking will be free.
