BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU Volleyball junior Alyssa Cavanaugh has collected a second All-America accolade following a stellar 2016 campaign as the Louisville, Kentucky, native was named a VolleyballMag.com All-America honorable mention selection.
In contrast to the AVCA All-America honors, VolleyballMag.com does not accept submissions. The organization follows all Division I Volleyball action from the season's first matches through the NCAA Championship to compile its All-America squads. Additionally, VolleyballMag.com considers both a student-athlete's regular season and postseason performance.
Following her third season on The Hill, Cavanaugh has collected three-straight AVCA All-America nods to go along with her most recent VolleyballMag.com All-America team selection.
Of the 84 players honored by VolleyballMag.com this week, Cavanaugh was the lone Conference USA name on the list.
During her third season in the red and white, the 2016 C-USA Player of the Year tallied 516 kills to lead the conference and rank 18th across the nation. Additionally, Cavanaugh led all outside hitters across the country that took 1,000 or more swings this season in hitting percentage, working at a .343 clip on the season.
To go along with her pair of All-America accolades this season, Cavanaugh was also selected to the AVCA All-South Region Team, All-Conference USA First Team, All-Conference USA Tournament Team, in addition to being named a C-USA Preseason All-Conference selection and a two-time league Offensive Player of the Week.
In 2016, WKU Volleyball put together an impressive 30-3 record, which included the program's fifth-ever undefeated record in conference play. Additionally, three losses ties the fewest losses the Lady Toppers have ever suffered during a season (2005, 31-3). After compiling a clean slate through regular-season conference play, WKU continued its streak into the league tournament where it became just the second team to go undefeated and win the tournament championship as well. From September 16 until December 2, WKU did not lose a match, stringing together 21-consecutive victories for the second longest streak in the nation at that time.
