CARBONDALE, Ill. -- No. 20 WKU volleyball opened the 2015 Saluki Invitational swinging as the Lady Toppers defeated UT Martin (2-5) in three sets (25-9, 25-7, 25-13) Friday afternoon in SIU Arena.
Sophomore Alyssa Cavanaugh led the offensive charge for the Lady Tops as the outside hitter finished the contest with a match-best 12 kills on a .524 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Sydney Engle finished with seven kills while senior Noelle Langenkamp and freshman Rachel Anderson each added four for the Lady Tops. WKU finished the match with a season-best .420 average, laying down a combined 38 kills with just four errors.
WKU recorded its best offensive showing in the third set as the Lady Toppers finished with a team hitting percentage of .424 after laying down 16 kills on 33 attacks with just two errors.
Sophomore setter Jessica Lucas finished with a team-high 26 assists to go along with four digs and three kills.
Defensively, WKU (4-0) held the Skyhawks to a -.057 average on the match as the Lady Toppers finished with eight total blocks on the afternoon. Junior Georgia O'Connell led the way with 10 kills on the contest while Rachel Engle added eight.
The Lady Toppers return to action Saturday afternoon with a contest against host Southern Illinois at noon CT. WKU closes out action of the two-day invitational with a match against Dayton at 4:30 p.m. CT.
