NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Competing against top regional and national teams, the WKU men's cross country team gained valuable experience on Saturday with its showing in the Commodore Classic.
Of the four Hilltoppers that ran on the day, senior Aaron Stevens posted the fastest time at the 8,000-meter course with a mark of 26:10.7 to place just outside the Top 50. The time was the third-fastest of his career in 8K meets as he continued his great start to the season to finish 56th.
"We made positive strides again this weekend," said head coach Erik Jenkins. "Aaron Stevens has emerged as a positive team leader for us. He had another good weekend and competed against some of the best runners in the country."
Freshman Julien Cuyeu recorded the second-best time for WKU at 27:59.7, followed by Sam Porter (29:04.4) and Mark Stice (31:08.9). Coach Jenkins was happy with his team's showing and the level of competition at the nearby meet.
"Vanderbilt has done a good job of developing the meet and attracting quality competition. Meets like this, and the next two we compete in, are crucial for our development," Jenkins said.
Both of the WKU cross country teams will be back in action on Oct. 3 as the two squads will participate in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.
