DEKALB, Ill. -- WKU volleyball completed a perfect weekend Saturday afternoon as the Lady Toppers came back to defeat host Northern Illinois in five sets (25-23, 12-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-7) in order to capture the 2015 Huskie Invitational, finishing with a 3-0 record.
WKU took control of the match early as the Lady Toppers edged the Huskies, 25-23, in order to take the opening set of the match.
NIU responded in the second by holding WKU to just 12 points as the Huskies tied the match with a commanding, 25-12, victory.
After dropping the third set, 25-17, WKU's backs were firmly against the wall as NIU went up 2-1 on the match.
The Lady Toppers responded in grand fashion as WKU raced out to an 8-0 advantage in the fourth set and never surrendered its lead as the Lady Tops pushed the match into a fifth set with a 25-17 victory.
In the fifth, WKU once again used a great start to take control of the set. Leading 5-0, the Lady Toppers never looked back as WKU captured the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.
Alyssa Cavanaugh led WKU with 18 kills off .350 hitting while Noelle Langenkamp finished with 17 and freshman Rachel Anderson added a career-high 12 kills on .346 hitting.
Cavanaugh led WKU offensively the entire the weekend as the sophomore finished with 49 total kills (4.08/set) on the weekend.
Sophomore Jessica Lucas had a fantastic effort for the Lady Tops against the Huskies as the setter finished with a near triple double of 48 assists, 14 digs and six kills.
Defensively, Kaelin Grimes recorded a team-high 12 digs while Georgia O'Connell added 11 for the Lady Tops.
With its first five-set victory of the year, WKU improves its road record to a perfect 4-0. With the win over host NIU, the Lady Toppers captured its fourth non-conference tournament of the season.
WKU (12-2) returns to action this Wednesday as the Lady Toppers open league play by traveling to Marshall for a 5 p.m. CT match with the Thundering Herd.
