BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU (4-2-2) women's soccer continued their unbeaten streak, getting a 2-1 win against Memphis (4-2-1) on Friday night at WKU Soccer Complex.
Iris Dunn got things started in the 34th minute for the Lady Toppers after Nahyo Jalajel served a ball into the box off of a free kick, getting it into Chandler Clark who headed the ball in the direction of the goal. The Memphis keeper was there to make a play on the ball, but was only able to deflect it sending it right to Dunn. The junior forward got control of the ball and punched it in.
Sydney Kingston scored the equalizer for the Tigers in the 73rd minute off of a corner kick. The score was tied for just 10 minutes, when Hannah Chua scored her third goal in three games. Chua took control of the ball in the midfield and dribbled around a Memphis defender, firing her open shot from 15 yards out the ball hit the back of the net to give the Lady Toppers their fourth win of the season.
"I thought we had some big time performances from some of our players tonight," commented head coach Jason Neidell. "I thought Iris Dunn, Megan Morris, Caitlin Hesse and Hannah Chua were just exceptional for us tonight."
Dunn and Chua both have four goals each on the season. Dunn now has 16 career goals making her the ninth all-time scorer in WKU program history in just her third season on the Hill. Chua nets her second game-winner of the season and fifth goal of her career. The last three games for WKU has either featured a Chua go-ahead goal or equalizer.
"She's just really explosive both on the dribble and on her runs," Neidell said of Chua. "She has a really unique way to get herself open and then she attacks really well on the dribble."
Going into the game, WKU had never beaten Memphis in the previous three times the two teams had played. Two of those three times, Memphis was ranked in the Top 25. Friday's win notches WKU's first win against Memphis.
In the past five games, WKU has given up only four goals after giving up nine goals in the first three games of the season. The Lady Toppers have also not a lost a game since falling to LSU on Aug. 28th in Baton Rouge, La.
The Lady Toppers kick off conference play on Friday, Sept. 25th against the defending champions Rice at WKU Soccer Complex at 6:00 PM. WKU then hosts Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Sept. 27th at 1:00 PM.
