BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU closed out its second week of spring practice on Friday afternoon with their first scrimmage of the spring, a two-hour workout inside Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Senior quarterback Brandon Doughty, who is returning for his sixth year on The Hill, picked up where the left off, throwing for a crisp 168 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-12 passing attempts in limited action. However, the day was more about competition at other positions and head coach Jeff Brohm was able to assess where his team was just five practices in.
"I think we had a good scrimmage and got a lot accomplished," Brohm said. "In practice, to get guys a lot of reps, we've had two things going on at once. Today, we were limited with a few guys nicked up, but we wanted to get as many guys in there and let them prove what they can do."
The Hilltopper defense has picked up the intensity as of late and the scrimmage gave a plethora of new players, particularly in the line and linebacking corps, the chance to make a name for themselves this spring.
"I think we're going to be improved and have more beef up front," Brohm added. "There are certain guys who play hard and we're trying to get more size and strength, which we've seen in the weight room. We gave up a couple big plays when we just didn't get lined up the way we needed to, but they have made strides."
WKU returns to the practice field on Monday. All practices are open and run from 4-6 p.m. inside Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Spring practice concludes with the annual Red and White Game, set for April 18 at 1 p.m.
