WKU Tennis Drops First Match in Conference USA Play

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- After winning their first home match of the season, the WKU women's tennis team lost 4-1 to Middle Tennessee on Sunday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Lady Toppers are now 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in Conference USA play.

The Lady Toppers lost the doubles point for the first time since losing to Tennessee in the first match of the season on January 24. Giulia Squadrin and Jesse Grace of Middle Tennessee got the first win over Gabby Crofford and Emily Przystawski, 8-1. Brittany Huxley and Nayara Moraes then followed pursuit and defeated Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou, 8-3.

In singles, Andreanna Christopoulou continued her winning streak by defeating Squadrin at the No. 4, 6-2, 6-4. Tereza Hejlova faced Darya Shulzhanok at the No. 2. Hejlova won the first set 6-4, but then lost the second set 4-6. After two tough sets, Hejlova was unable to hang on and lost the third, 6-0. Emilia Granstrom faced a similar fate. Granstrom won her first set at No. 1 against Tiffany Williamson, 6-4. Williamson came back in the second match to even with a 6-4 win over Granstrom. In the third set, Williamson pulled out a close victory with another 6-4 decision. Gabby Crofford lost at No. 5 to Brittany Huxley. Elpida Malamou (No. 3) and Emily Przystawski (No. 6) did not finish their matches against their opponents.

WKU will host UT-Martin on Friday at 2:00 pm at the WKU Tennis Complex. The Lady Toppers will then travel to Florida March 8-12 where they will play matches against Florida Atlantic, Long Island, Boston, and FIU.
