BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU Head Football Coach Jeff Brohm announced on Monday the promotions of two coaches and added duties of a third, filling the running backs coach vacancy in the process.
Bryan Ellis, formerly offensive quality control coach for the Hilltoppers, has been promoted to coaching the Hilltopper running backs while former offensive graduate assistant coach Zach Lankford will fill the quality control vacancy. Wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard will also now split special teams coordinating duties with cornerbacks coach Ricky Brumfield, who has worked with the special teams both of his seasons on The Hill.
"Bryan is a bright young coach and someone I felt was ready for the challenge of coaching at this level," said Brohm. "He was instrumental in our success on the offensive side of the ball in 2014, and his familiarity with the team and the type of offense we want to be made him the ideal candidate to fill the position."
Shephard adds special teams duties to his workload, returning to an area of the game where he was a standout kick returner as a player at DePauw University. In 2004, Shephard tied an NCAA record for kickoffs returned for a touchdown in a single game with two and finished his collegiate career as DePauw's all-time leader in kickoff return yards and kickoff return average.
Prior to WKU, Ellis spent two seasons on the coaching staff at his alma mater, UAB, working with the offense. In 2010 at UAB, he started nine games at quarterback for the Blazers and threw for 2,940 yards and 25 touchdowns in 11 games. Ellis, a Byron, Ga., native, had an outstanding prep career at Peach County High and was tabbed the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA State Offensive Player of the Year. He passed for more than 3,600 and threw 31 touchdowns as a senior, leading his Trojans' squad to a 14-1 record and Class AAA State Championship.
