PROVO, Utah -- 11th-ranked and No. 13 overall seed BYU (28-3) proved to be too much for the WKU volleyball team Saturday evening as the Lady Toppers' season came to close after a three-set loss to the Cougars (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) in BYU's George Albert Smith Fieldhouse.
"We ran into a better team tonight," head coach Travis Hudson said. "We knew coming in that they were a really good team and BYU played at a very high level and they certainly deserved to win the match."
WKU's Sydney Engle led the way for the Lady Toppers as the sophomore finished with a team-high 10 kills on .556 hitting. WKU struggled to find their rhythm both offensively and defensively all match as the Lady Toppers finished with a .245 hitting percentage compared to BYU's .433 hitting. Fellow sophomore Alyssa Cavanaugh finished with 8 kills while rookie Rachel Anderson added seven. Setter Jessica Lucas ended her tremendous sophomore campaign with a match-high 34 assists to go along with six digs and three kills.
WKU had a tremendous effort from the service line for the second consecutive match as the Lady Toppers tallied six on the evening led by senior Rachel Engle who finished with three in her final collegiate match.
The Cougars were led by outside hitter Alexis Gray who finished with a match-high 22 kills on .541 hitting. Middle blocker Amy Boswell added 10 kills for the Cougars who extended their current winning streak in Smith Fieldhouse to 26 matches.
WKU finishes one of the best seasons in program history with a 32-4 overall record. The 32 victories ranks second all-time in program history just one shy of the program record of 33 set in 2002 (33-5) and 2012 (33-4).
The senior class of Noelle Langenkamp, Haley Bodway and Rachel Engle finishes their spectacular collegiate careers with an overall record of 122-20 overall record. The trio has led WKU to the NCAA Tournament in three of their four seasons on The Hill.
