BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU junior pitcher Ian Tompkins has been named a Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District® selection, the organization announced Thursday. Tompkins is one of two pitchers representing District II on the Academic All-District® Team.
Tompkins has been equally stellar on the mound and in the classroom, picking up a school record 12 saves in 2014 while sporting a 3.78 cumulative GPA as an accounting major. The junior southpaw ranks third among active NCAA pitchers with a career strikeouts per nine innings clip of 12.29 as he's struck out 58 batters and allowed five earned runs in his last 39 appearances dating back to the end of the 2013 season.
Tompkins was named to the NCBWA Mid-Season Stopper of the Year Watch List on April 23 and currently ranks sixth in the nation with 12 saves. His 12 saves are three more than any pitcher in the Sun Belt. He broke the school record for single-season saves Tuesday night at Austin Peay by preserving WKU's 6-5 lead over the final 1.1 innings and ranks third on the team with 42 strikeouts in just 23.2 innings pitched. Tompkins was also the lone relief pitcher selected to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference First Team in February.
Tompkins has completed five academic semesters and has been a member of the Principal's List on four occasions while making the President's List once. He is a member of the WKU Honors College and holds a cumulative GPA of 3.78. He joins Troy's Tyler Vaughn as the only Sun Belt Conference baseball players to earn Academic All-District® distinction.
With his selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team, Tompkins will now be placed on the national ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team. Members of the Academic All-America® Committee and the CoSIDA Board of Directors vote at the national level to determine the Capital One Academic All-America® teams. Voting begins May 6.
