BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Hilltopper tennis team opens its season this weekend with matches against Georgetown College and Bellarmine University while the Lady Toppers continue their year with a match against Southeast Missouri State University.
The Hilltoppers take on in-state foe Georgetown Friday at noon (CT) in Lexington, Ky. WKU defeated Georgetown 6-1 last year and have beaten the Tigers in all three meetings.
The Hilltoppers will be led by some familiar faces as they return with eight letterwinners from last season. Junior Andrew Fish leads all active athletes with 15 singles wins. Newcomer Andrew Hill, a freshman from Monroe, Ga., could see his first action for WKU this weekend.
Following the Georgetown match, WKU travels to Louisville on Saturday as the Hilltoppers take on the Bellarmine Knights. The Knights took last year's match 4-3, but trail the Hilltoppers 20-4 in the all-time series.
The Lady Toppers are coming off an opening weekend sweep of USI and will look to improve to 2-0 this Sunday when they play SEMO in Murray, Ky.
"I was real happy with the way our team came out last weekend in Evansville. I thought we built some momentum that we can take into Sunday's match," said head coach Jeff True.
The Hilltoppers were slated to play USI along with the Lady Toppers last weekend, but inclement weather forced the Hilltoppers' match to be postponed. The two teams are scheduled to make-up the match Feb. 16 in Evansville, Ind.
The Lady Toppers are also dealing with some schedule changes, as their meeting with Georgetown on Friday has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the tennis facility. No announcement has been made as to whether or not the match will be rescheduled.
