BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Two signees of Western Kentucky University volleyball's recent signing class were named to the 2013 PrepVolleyball.com High School All-America Lists, as Alyssa Cavanaugh and Jessica Lucas were selected as honorees.
Cavanaugh was named one of 150 All-Americans and was just one of six players selected from the state of Kentucky. She led nationally-ranked Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky., to four state titles after the Rockets won the 2013 championship. The outside hitter was also named an Under Armour Honorable Mention All-America honoree as well as one of PrepVolleyball.com's Top 200 Senior Aces during her career. A First-Team All-State selection, Cavanaugh garnered Kentucky State All-Tournament and Kentucky All-Catholic Volleyball Team awards.
"Alyssa is an explosive athlete who will be able to do exciting things in our offense," said WKU head coach Travis Hudson. "Her combination of athleticism and competitiveness will make her a fan favorite from day one."
Lucas was selected as a highest honorable mention selection to the PrepVolleyball.com All-America honorees. Lucas comes to WKU after earning All-Conference, All-Area and team MVP all four years as a setter at Seymour High School in Indiana. A First-Team All-State honoree, Lucas set the career assist record with 3,597 and single-season assist record with 988 while guiding her team to the IHSAA Final Four in 2011 and Final Eight in 2012. Lucas was invited to play in the ICGSA Junior All-Star Volleyball Game in 2011. Lucas enrolled at WKU in January and joins the team for the spring offseason.
"We think Jessica is one of the top setters in the country with still a tremendous upside for improvement," said Hudson. "The fact that she enrolled early will allow her to fully grasp our offense and be ready to lead us from day one."
PrepVolleyball.com describes the All-American selection process as follows:
"To be a High School All-American, you must have made a massive impact on your high school team. `Massive' is subjective, but at a minimum requires that you be the best player on your team and one of the top 3-5 players in your state regardless of class, except for volleyball hotbeds like California, Texas, Indiana and Illinois,..., where you must be among the 10 best high school players regardless of class."
