BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - With a top-25 winning percentage in the nation, the WKU volleyball team continues to have a strong hold in the national standings, as the Lady Toppers come in at No. 32 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll and at No. 44 in the NCAA RPI, both organizations released on Monday.
For the fourth-straight week, WKU is receiving votes in the AVCA national poll, sporting a 23-5 record and an 11-1 mark in Conference USA action. The Lady Toppers are one of six teams in the NCAA with 23 wins, the most in the nation, as four of the teams are listed in the AVCA poll with Washington (23-0) at No. 2, Florida State (23-0) at No. 3 and Colorado State (23-2) at No. 10 joining WKU.
It's the fifth time this season that WKU is a team among the nationally ranked. WKU has either received votes or ranked in the AVCA top 25 at least one time over each of the last four seasons. WKU's highest ranking came in 2013 at No. 16 while the team spent 14-consecutive weeks in the top 25 over the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Despite the win over the weekend against UAB, WKU dropped in the RPI from No. 38 to No. 44, but still holds as the highest-ranked team in Conference USA. Of the 43 teams above WKU, 13 conferences are represented, including nine from the Pac-12, six from the Big Ten and five from each the Big 12 and SEC. WKU is 2-1 against teams ranked higher than it in the RPI with wins over Purdue (33) and Lipscomb (38) while the lone loss is to Cal State Northridge (36).
Against the top 50 RPI, WKU is 2-2, and extending that out to the top 100 and 150 has WKU at 6-5 and 9-5, respectively. WKU's five losses this season come to teams in the top 75.
The Lady Toppers stay on the road this upcoming weekend, as the team goes to Southern Miss on Friday, Nov. 7 before heading to Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 9. The match in Hattiesburg begins at 7 p.m. CT while first serve against the Thundering Herd is set for noon CT.
The 2014 WKU volleyball season is being presented by the United States Marines. This season, the Marines and WKU Athletics are working together to promote the outstanding athletic and academic achievements of our female student-athletes. The Marines are proud to work with and support these future leaders of America.
