Postgame Marshall
November 28, 2014
WKU QB Brandon Doughty
On the two point play... "Well we had no doubt. We had some confidence going into it. We thought Coach Brohm called the right play. I knew right when we scored (the touchdown) he was going to call it. It was a blessing. God's done so many things in my life and I can't thank Him enough.
On losing his voice "I was trying get everything out there and get all my calls and make sure everyone heard me. They were a little loud out there so I had to be a little louder than I wanted to be."
On what the wins means to the seniors "It's amazing. We've been through so much. I relayed that to those guys and said `Hey, we've been through so much. Why not do this for one more game?' One game at a time. One play at a time. I think that's what we did today. We took it as one game at a time."
On having the talented receivers he has... "It's gives you confidence (as a quarterback). Those guys can go up and get it no matter what happens. I have a lot of confidence in all those guys. They make me look good. I'm really excited about their future here."
On playing in a hostile environment "It was pretty crazy. The Marshall fans were yelling and screaming, but it was cool. It was good for us. It was good for our team to go through a little adversity and come out on top. I'm really excited about what the future holds."
On what the game does for him personally "It's just a confidence booster. I'm trying to compete with myself. They made a couple of comments before the game that shook me the wrong way and it motivated me to put up a big performance
WKU Head Coach Jeff Brohm
On decision to try two-point conversion "Well I think we knew the game we just keep going on if we didn't go for two. When (Garrett) Schwettman got roughed, he hurt his ankle and that factored into it a little bit. We said after regulation that if we score, we're going for two and we did. It was a huge play, a great play by Brandon (Doughty). It was a play we've kind of executed before. The second half was much more of a struggle. (It was) just a tremendous effort. Unbelievable ball game. Our guys have battled these past four weeks and really came through big."
On game plan "On Offense, we were going to be aggressive and we were going to take shots. As you could tell in the first half, we did. We took shots. They worked. Our guys executed. You need players to execute and they did - even made some plays on their own, some scrambles. The defense played good at times but that's a good offense. That's a good football team. They're No. 1 in the conference for a reason. We definitely didn't play tremendous on defense but neither did they. Our guys fought hard, they battled, they found a way to make stops when they had to, they slowed them down at times but we were going to be aggressive and go for the win."
On whether first half was craziest half of football he'd been a part of "It was. I think both teams wanted to go fast and we were. I looked up in the first quarter and I didn't know how many points there were to get out of hand. It slowed down slightly in the second quarter and of course in the second half it slowed down quite a bit. Unbelievable game. A lot of plays being made, our guys played hard, continued to fight and battle. The momentum swung back and forth a lot but to win at this place, against an undefeated team, Top 25 with a lot of implications on the line - definitely with the way we were playing in the middle of the year, to bounce back and continue to improve (like we have) I couldn't be happier."
On energy of the team "I like our team. I like our guys. We've always practiced hard. We always have a great attitude and we have great effort. We want our guys to have fun playing the game. That's what it is all about. As you can tell out there today in that game, those guys are having fun. Guys work hard. They understand that it's not all going to be easy. We're always going to be there for them. We tell them all the time `Look, we made mistakes and we're going to correct ourselves first.' They bought in. They just work hard every day. They enjoy the game of football. To compete at a high level in the conference in the first year against some really good teams and to finish like we did - I'm ecstatic."
On senior captains being so emotional "Those guys built this program. They've been here for five years. They've been through the ups and downs. They've always been a positive influence, always been tremendous workers, tremendous people, love the game of football, love their teammates and love this university and everything about it. I'm sure they couldn't be happier as well to end on a note like this."
"We called this our championship game. We advanced to the championship. We played the champion, an undefeated team. To beat them...that says a lot."
On players feeding off environment "Our team likes it. They like playing in these environments. We haven't played well on the road so to come here in this environment, play well, battle and compete going back and forth, staying in it, staying together and going hard. They without question did a good job."
On halftime message "I told our team at halftime that `Really we have them right where we want them. Defense, don't lose your confidence. We've scored more than they have. Keep playing hard. We'll get stops. Don't doubt yourself. Get lined up. Stick together. Fight until the end. Offense, we just have to continue to execute and make plays.' I thought they did exactly that and to finish on a play like that is remarkable."
On getting the chance to play in a bowl game "It's tremendous. To fight back from where we were at, to experience some of the losses we experienced and to find a way to just keep getting better, keep working at it and for them to reel off four in a row says a lot. We called this our championship game and it was. And hey, now you get to advance again because we won the championship in our mind against a great team. We get to advance to another game and I know they're extremely, extremely happy."
