BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Jeff Brohm and his WKU Hilltopper football team began game week preparations on Tuesday for their third Conference USA game of the season, a Saturday morning showdown at Florida Atlantic.
Saturday's game will air on the American Sports Network with an 11 a.m. CT kick-off from Boca Raton, Fla. The game has been picked up and will air locally in Bowling Green on WKU-PBS, in Louisville on WAVE, in Lexington on WTVQ and in Nashville on WUXP.
The Hilltoppers practiced in full pads under early fall temperatures for roughly two hours in preparations for the Owls, who hold a 5-1 advantage in the series. However, the last time WKU and FAU squared off in Boca Raton, in 2011, the Red and White came away with a 20-0 victory. The Hilltoppers are currently riding a two-game winning streak in the Sunshine State as well.
Quarterback Brandon Doughty, the nation's No. 2 passer with 433.0 yards per game, is one of 29 Hilltoppers from the state of Florida and will be looking forward to playing near his native Davie, Fla., on Saturday.
"It's going to be cool. All my family will get to (come watch us play)," Doughty said. "I have a cousin with autism who can't travel, so he's going to get to go to his first Hilltopper game. That will be really cool. I'm excited to see all of my family."
Over the bye week, the Hilltoppers looked for ways to not only improve on the field, but also in the locker room and Doughty believes the team-picked scrimmage from Tuesday helped his squad grow together.
"Sometimes (during practice) you get caught up in playing, and you don't cheer on maybe the No. 2s on defense," Doughty noted. "You just try to practice football, but guys got after it. I thought we played really well and we came together as a team. Our camaraderie really improved."
WKU will return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon with defensive players and coaches scheduled to speak following the season.
