NEW ORLEANS - Western Kentucky University volleyball senior Melanie Stutsman earned Setter of the Week honors for her effort in last weekend's wins to open league play, the conference announced Monday.
Stutsman won her third-consecutive Setter of the Week award after she led WKU to an opening pair of victories in Sun Belt Conference play last weekend. She led the league with 13.67 assists per set against Troy and South Alabama and averaged more than 12.50 assists per set over the pair of matches, including 12.67 at Troy and 14.67 at South Alabama. She boosted WKU to a league-best .373 hitting percentage with 16.67 kills per set, as she hit .364 for the weekend, which also ranks in the SBC top 10.
She recorded her second double-double of the season with 38 assists and 14 digs against the Trojans. Along with her 44 assists at South Alabama, she added two blocks and six kills against the Jags while also adding a pair of service aces.
Stutsman currently ranks second in the league and 29th in the nation with 11.02 assists per set while she has set WKU to a team hitting percentage of .303, which ranks ninth nationally.
Stutsman is now 565 assists from the all-time WKU record, as she has 4,607 in her career and 628 this season. WKU's current all-time assist record is held by Sara Noe (1999-02) with 5,172 while Stutsman follows in second.
WKU (12-4) faces all three newcomers to the Sun Belt Conference this week, starting at Georgia State on Wednesday, October 2 at 5 p.m. CT. The Lady Toppers then return home to take on Texas State and UT Arlington this weekend. The team faces the Bobcats on Friday at 6 p.m. and the Mavericks on Saturday at 3 p.m.
