MOBILE, Ala. - WKU opens their 2013 Sun Belt Conference slate today when they take on South Alabama (1-1) inside Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be seen live on ESPN3. Brock Bowling and Warrick Dunn are slated to call the action.
It is the first meeting between the two schools who have a long rivalry in SBC basketball play. WKU (1-1) has won 11 of its last 15 games in Sun Belt Conference play after losing 15 of its first 17 conference games since joining the league in 2009 as a full-time football member. WKU has also won its last two SBC road openers. WKU is 2-2 in SBC road openers all-time.
WKU is playing its third game away from home to start the season. It is the first time that has happened since 2008. WKU started that season 1-2. WKU also opened the season with three games away from home in 1931, 1941, 1948, 1983 and 1993.
South Alabama is led by quarterback Ross Metheny, who helped the Jaguars break a seven-game losing skid last week with a 41-39 victory over Conference USA foe Tulane in New Orleans. Metheny has gone 31-of-47 for 402 yards through the air with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
On defense, Enrique Williams' 15 tackles lead the team while Quadarius Ford's three pass breakups are a team-best.
For the Tops, junior Brandon Doughty will make his fourth career start at quarterback. Doughty has completed 44 of 68 attempts for 493 yards. Last year's NCAA all-purpose leader Antonio Andrews leads the team on the ground, carrying the ball for a 6.4 yard average (33 for 210 yards) with one touchdown.
The Hilltoppers open their home schedule next Saturday when they host Morgan State from Houchens-Smith Stadium. Kick-off for the Live United White Out game is set for 6 p.m.
