2013 WKU FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE 6
SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2013
HOUCHENS INDUSTRIES-L.T. SMITH STADIUM
JEFF BROHM, NEIL CALLAWAY, SEAN CONWAY
WKU offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm
(on the quarterbacks)
“I think the quarterbacks are making good progress. They are working extremely hard and they are attacking it every day with a good attitude. We are going to try and put pressure on them every day to perform at a high level, and I think they are responding well. I think we just keep working hard and we’ll get it done.”
(on what he has seen out of the offensive line)
“They have to be the tough backbone of the team. I think we have some guys that like to be physical, they like to come off the ball and knock people back and I think they have to be the strength of the team. With the running game, and the ability to run with all of the running backs we have and throw the play-action, it is an o-lineman’s dream, instead of just pass-blocking each play. I think they have done well, they are working hard and they just have to keep it up.”
(on the live action at the end of the practice)
“I thought it was great. To get in live situations and get our guys out there where things aren’t scripted. They have to hear the play and they have to make their calls quickly and they have to play fast and also play efficiently. I think it’s a great thing to do. We had some guys make some plays, and that it is important. I think right now it is about our guys working as hard as they can every single day and us pushing them and then them pushing themselves. When it comes time to play the game, they have to play fast, tough, but also with belief in themselves. I think when you push guys every day, then they attack the field on game day, they believe in themselves.”
(on the mistakes that the coaches are working to correct after the first two weeks)
“We are obviously going to try and correct mistakes each time and get better. Right now we are trying to push them mentally and throw things at them and probably do more than we would normally do throughout the course of a game-week. But we want to see want our guys can do and what they can handle and what they are good at. The great thing about Coach [Bobby] Petrino and his offense is we are going to throw things at them and see what we are good at and adjust it to our talent and really adjust it to the quarterback that we have. He is going to play efficiently, make plays, take care of the ball and do things the right way. That is really our plan right now.”
Offensive line coach Neil Callaway
(on the live session at Saturday’s practice)
“There were some good things [in the session]. It was just a half-scrimmage. We practiced for a good while, then we scrimmaged the last part of it. Overall I think we made some progress, but we obviously have a long way to go. As an offensive unit you are only as good as your worst player. We have to make sure that all of our guys are doing the right thing at the right time when they are supposed to.”
(on if the players are starting to fully grasp the offense)
“Somewhat. I think we still have a long way to go. We have a lot of things left that we don’t fully understand, but the main thing right now is that we are playing hard and playing with energy and playing with enthusiasm. We want to do things right. We are going to have mistakes this early, but we don’t want them. At the same time, it is going to happen. As long as they are playing with energy and enthusiasm, that is a big key for us.”
(on the offensive line)
“We have done some good things. We are not anywhere close where we need to be. We have couple of guys in Sean Conway and Luis Polanco that have played. They are learning the new system, so they are struggling like other guys. But they are doing some good things as well. Again, if we play hard and play with energy, that is the main thing.”
(on the first two weeks of spring practice)
“We are still implementing things and new things are going in. But things that we are repeatedly making mistakes on, that is inexcusable. We have to learn and move on. There is going to be a lot of offense in there. There are a lot of things we have to know as an offensive line and as an offensive unit. We have to learn as we go and then move on to the next one and carry that with us as we go.”
(on if there are changes being made to the offensive line this year)
“Not really. I think we are a little different. I studied some of last year’s film and obviously they did a good job and were very successful. We are a little different style. We are going to run the ball, but we are also going to have drop-back passes. Not that they didn’t do that. I’m not saying that. I think it will be a little different style than what they had last year. They did a nice job, but I just think it will a little bit different.”
Offensive lineman Sean Conway
(on the offensive line to this point)
“We’ve been good. Just like Coach [Callaway] said, we have been struggling a little bit with the new offense, but practice makes perfect. We are just going to keep coming out and grinding until we get it right.”
(on if it has been easy to adjust to the new offense)
“It is easier in some ways because we are used to the game tempo and the game atmosphere. But also there is a new offense, so we have to learn new plays just like everyone else.”
(on the first two weeks of practice)
“I think we are starting to get more used to the tempo of Coach Petrino’s offense. It is a lot faster and I think we are starting to get used to that and starting to know who to go to and we are starting to get the right technique down.”
(on the three quarterbacks)
“I think they are all doing well. To be honest with you I really don’t know who would be first, second, or third. But they are great.”
