OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Western Kentucky University volleyball senior Ashley Potts wraps a stellar career on The Hill with Second-Team All-American honors from the Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced Thursday.
Potts is one of 10 national student-athletes chosen to the list and is the first-ever selection from the WKU volleyball program. Penn State's Ariel Scott was selected as the 2013 Senior CLASS Award winner in the sport.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I volleyball coaches, national volleyball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, community, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Potts earned the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Year award three times in her career after playing in all 141 games while on The Hill. She led the conference in digs per set with an average of 4.90. She also averaged 5.32 digs per set during conference play. The Louisville, Ky., native tallied 554 digs this season as she totaled 1,879 digs to become WKU's all-time leader.
Off the court, the defensive specialist excels in the classroom while finding time to give back to the local community. Focusing on receiving her degree in biology with a minor in chemistry, Potts is consistently named to the SBC Commissioner's List for her end-of-the-year GPA and has been named to WKU Dean's List or President's List each semester of her college career.
In the community, Potts participated the last two years in the United Way Day of Caring while taking part in Toys for Tots, Special Olympics and "Stuff the Bus." She helps raise money for various cancer research fundraisers, including Kela's Crew and Dig for the Cure while alongside her teammates and coaches is involved in helping the causes of Hope for Harlie and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
