LEXINGTON, Ky. - Western Kentucky University volleyball seniors Ashley Potts and Paige Wessel were selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Southeast Region team as honorable mention selections, the organization announced Monday.
It is the first time in their careers that Potts or Wessel earned an honor from the AVCA. The accolades come as the fifth-straight year that WKU has had at least two student-athletes in one season selected to an All-Region team while marking the seventh time overall. In the program's history, WKU has 19 All-Region selections, all under the direction of 19-year head coach Travis Hudson.
Potts earned the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Year award three times in her career after playing in all 141 games while on The Hill. She led the conference in digs per set with an average of 4.90. She also averaged 5.32 digs per set during conference play. The Louisville, Ky., native tallied 554 digs this season and is one of 10 national finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. For her career, Potts totaled 1,879 digs to become WKU's all-time leader.
Wessel powered the WKU offense this season with a .458 hitting percentage, ranking fourth in the nation and as the only outside hitter to rank in the top 25 nationally. That number also gave Wessel the single-season record at WKU for a hitting mark while leading the league. A two-time First-Team All-SBC selection, she also led the team this season in kills with 323 for a 2.86 kills per set average. In her career, Wessel hit .367 for the Lady Toppers, which ranks second all-time in program history.
The AVCA will announce its All-America selections on Wed., Dec. 18. To view the full list of All-Regions winners, visit AVCA.org.
