HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - WKU's Payton Hulsey flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but the Hilltoppers fell to Marshall, 74-64.
T.J. Price and Brandon Harris each had 11 for Western Kentucky.
Chris Thomas scored 27 points and had six steals as Marshall overcame an early first-half deficit.
Trailing by 36-22 late in the first half, Thomas hit two free throws to cap off an 8-0 run for the Thundering Herd (4-2) and only trail by six at the break.
A layup and two more free throws by Thomas at the 12:35 mark in the second half gave Marshall the lead for good. The Hilltoppers pulled within four with 2:23 remaining, but Marshall hit nine of its last 10 free throws to maintain the edge.
Thomas shot 7 of 12 from the field and was 12 of 13 from the free throw line. Kareem Canty added 15 points for Marshall.
