BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU tennis teams competed in two exhibition tournaments this fall in preparation for the spring schedule. The first competition was hosted by Austin Peay on September 20th and 21st and included Austin Peay, WKU, and North Alabama. The second competition took place on November 3rd and featured Murray State and Jacksonville State in addition to the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers.
Head coach Jeff True said that he saw the best results in the doubles matches.
"Our experience in doubles showed in the two exhibitions. In recent years, we've been a better doubles team than singles team and that seems to be the case again this year."
True said he was also impressed with the balance of talent on the men's side in the singles game.
"Our strength in singles seems to be in the 4-5-6 positions. That's mainly because our team is pretty even from top to bottom."
As for the women, depth and experience really stood out. True noted those two qualities as the strongest parts of the team. In 2012, Monta Reinfelde started her sophomore campaign with a 20-0 record in doubles and singles combined, which is believed to be the best combined start from the No. 1 spot in WKU history. As a junior, Reinfelde once again led the team in singles wins with 12. True is expecting the senior to have another big year at No. 1.
Both teams kick off their spring seasons in Lexington on February 7th as they battle Georgetown (Ky.) at noon.
