Avoiding the 'Dog Days' - With the start of a new season now a full week behind them, third-year head coach Willie Taggart has targeted this second week of camp as an important milestone for his squad. With the fresh feel of a new practice season clearly in the rearview mirror, avoiding the "Dog days of camp" will be critical for WKU in the days ahead.
"We had a good week last week, and I expect us to have a great week this week," said Taggart. "This second week is always harder. Last week everyone was excited about coming out and working, so this second week is always important to see which guys can fight through and continue to get better."
Offensive Line Provides Veteran Leadership - While Taggart has been able to point out a number of bright spots from his team through one week of practice, perhaps the biggest has come from the guys in the trenches on the offensive line.
"Our offensive line is having a really good camp so far as a whole," said Taggart. "They are giving our quarterbacks time to throw the ball. You can tell those guys put in the time in the off season to get better and be more consistent."
Consistency and continuity shouldn't be a problem for that group, as four full-time starters return from a season ago, and all six of the upperclassmen on the line have started multiple games throughout their careers. In fact, those six - seniors Adam Smith, Seth White and Luke Stansfield, juniors Sean Conway and Luis Polanco, and sophomore Cameron Clemmons - have combined for 88 starts during their time on the Hill.
"These guys have played a lot of games together, and are coming along like I want them to," said offensive line coach Walt Wells. "We've been fortunate throughout the years to have some great players on the line and some great units, but this is a great group of kids, and they are working hard to be known as one of the best offensive lines ever to play at WKU."
Family Fun Day Less Than Two Weeks Away - The fourth annual Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 4-6 p.m. (CDT) at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. The free event will give WKU fans and opportunity to interact and get autographs from Hilltopper players and coaches. There will also be a Fun Zone set up for kids with activities including inflatables and face painting. Free Coke products and popcorn will also be provided to the first 500 fans.
