BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University junior right-hander Taylor Haydel has been recognized by the Sun Belt Conference as the SBC Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The honor is the first in his career for Haydel and the first for a Hilltopper this season.
In two appearances during WKU's series win against UALR, Haydel threw seven innings, allowing only four hits and an unearned run. The right-hander did not issue a walk and recorded 10 strikeouts.
Haydel picked up the win for the Hilltoppers in Sunday's finale after facing the minimum in four innings of relief. He shutout the Trojans on one hit, struck out four and did not issue a walk. In three innings of relief Friday, Haydel allowed an unearned run on three hits while matching a career high with six strikeouts.
UALR hit just .167 against Haydel. For the season, he is 2-2 with a 1.99 ERA with 34 strikeouts and only three walks. He has issued only one walk in four appearances against league opponents.
Up next for WKU (12-16) is a Tuesday matchup with in-state rival Louisville at 5 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
