WKU Interim Head Coach Lance Guidry
(Opening statement)
“I was proud of the way that we played today. The first half we were a little sluggish I thought. Defensively they ran the ball on us a little bit. They we able to hit a couple of big plays. Offensively we didn’t move the ball. We didn’t have the ball enough with possessions. The first half wasn’t real good, but the second half I thought we picked it up on defense and the offense had the ball nearly the whole third quarter. We left some plays out there on the field – a couple of interceptions and a couple of big plays in the passing game. Sometimes that is just the way the cookie crumbles.”
(On decision to go for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter on the final drive)
“We were going to kick the field goal. We had the unit in the huddle. Big Country [Adam Smith] said ‘Coach Guidry, we said we were going to let it all loose.’ I said ‘You’re right.’ I called up the defense and I said ‘Defense, do you all want to go for it?’ They said ‘Yes, we want to go for it.’ They kind of made the decision for me. I would do it every time and twice on Sunday. It is just the way it is. I put it in their hands and that’s the way they want it and that’s how I am going out.”
(On calling the late timeout before deciding to go for it)
“We wanted more time to go off of the clock to kick the field goal. When we got in the huddle, that is when they changed my mind. It is what it is. We took a good shot at the first down and we were a little short. Jack [Doyle] would have had to make a circus catch, like he always does.”
(On WKU’s experience in its first FBS bowl game in school history) “I thought they put on a good show. It must have been an exciting game to watch back home. It wasn’t exciting all of the time for us on the sideline. I thought they came out and they competed. We played without Andrew Jackson for most of the game. He had a bad ankle. We had Daerius Washington step up. I thought we competed hard. Central Michigan is a well-coached football team. They have a massive offensive line and their running back does some really good things. I thought they had a really good defensive game plan. We were having to take some shots on first down with our passing game and we weren’t catching them sometimes. In the second half we started getting our run game together. These guys are going to get in a lot of bowls in the future and this is a good experience for them.”
