Opening Kickoff
- Despite an 0-2 home record all-time against Florida Atlantic, the Hilltoppers have found themselves in close battles with the Owls in Bowling Green. In fact, the two FAU victories at Houchens-Smith Stadium have come by a combined five points. The Owls won the first-ever meeting between the two schools 24-20 on Oct. 18, 2008, and two years later left Bowling Green with a 17-16 victory on Nov. 6, 2010.
- The Hilltoppers take a second shot at equaling their win total from the 2011 season on Saturday when they host FAU. That would give the Hilltoppers back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2006 (6-5) and 2007 (7-5).
- Dating back to 2010, WKU's last five home Sun Belt Conference losses have come by a combined 12 points. That includes three one-point defeats at the hands of FAU and Middle Tennessee in 2010, and Louisiana-Monroe earlier this season.
- WKU is 8-5 all-time in games played on Nov. 10, and is looking to snap a four-game losing skid in games played on that date.
All-Purpose Antonio Strikes Again - All season long, junior Antonio Andrews has shown his versatility by racking up near record-setting all-purpose yardage. He took that to a new level against Middle Tennessee, racking up a career-best 392 all-purpose yards (136 rushing, 54 receiving, 182 kickoff return and 20 punt return). That was the most by a Hilltopper since Joey Stockton set a NCAA Division I-AA record with 467 all-purpose yards against Southern Illinois on Sept. 16, 1995. Andrews enters play this week with 1,972 all-purpose yards on the season - just 28 away from becoming only the fourth Hilltopper to ever eclipse 2,000 yards for the season. Bobby Rainey holds the school record with 2,101 all-purpose yards in 2009.
Another 1,000-Yard Season - Thanks to his 136 yards on the ground, Andrews reached another milestone against the Blue Raiders as he went over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. That marked the 16th 1,000-yard campaign in the history of WKU football, and gave the Hilltoppers a 1,000-yard rusher for the third straight season. Bobby Rainey reached the mark in both 2010 and 2011. It is the first time WKU has produced a 1,000 yard runner in three straight seasons since 1997-99. Willie Taggart did so in the first two campaigns, and Rod Smart reached the milestone during the 1999 season.
Jakes Ties TD Record - Kawaun Jakes threw for three touchdowns against Middle Tennessee last Thursday, his fifth game this season with at least three TD passes. That gave him 18 on the season, which has tied Jeff Cesarone's school record set during the 1985 season. Jakes is also closing in on the career passing touchdown mark as his 47 scoring passes over the last four years is just three away from equaling Justin Haddix's school record of 50. Of Jakes' 18 TD throws this season, 14 have come at home. In fact, in the four games played at Houchens-Smith Stadium this season, he is 74-for-103 passing for 1,059 yards. That is an average of 264.8 yards per game and a 71.8 completion percentage.
Smith Eyes SBC Sacks Record - With 11.5 sacks this season, senior defensive end Quanterus Smith has already equaled his total from the previous three seasons combined. It has also put him within reach of a Sun Belt Conference record. With 23 career quarterback take-downs, he is just one shy of tying the league mark of 24 set by Middle Tennessee's Erik Walden from 2004-07. The single-season league record for sacks is 13, set by Troy's Jonathan Massaquoi in 2010 and equaled by Arkansas State's Brandon Joiner in 2011.
Trio Hits Double Digits - Three Hilltopper defenders reached double-digit tackles against Middle Tennessee, with all three either setting or tying career highs. Defensive backs Kiante Young and Jonathan Dowling each set new bests with 14 and 10 tackles, respectively, while linebacker Andrew Jackson came in with 13 stops to equal his best. For Jackson, it was also the fourth time in five Sun Belt games that he has recorded double-figure tackles - averaging 10.4 tackles per game in league play. Jackson was also in the mix the last time WKU had three double-digit tacklers in a game last season when he joined Xavius Boyd with 10 tackles and Ben Duvall posted 14 stops against Navy last season.
Hilltoppers Get Bowl Eligible Again - With its 14-6 win at Florida International, the Hilltoppers picked up their sixth win of the season, and got bowl eligible for the second straight year - finishing 7-5 in 2011. WKU joins Louisiana-Monroe as the first two Sun Belt Conference teams to get bowl eligible. Middle Tennessee and Arkansas State have since joined WKU and ULM by picking up their sixth victories of the season. In all, 48 FBS teams are currently eligible for postseason play, while 16 more enter play this week one win away from eligibility.
Seven Straight For Andrews - After being held under 100 yards rushing in the first two games of the season, junior running back Antonio Andrews has been on a tear in the last seven weeks. Andrews ran for 136 yards on 25 carries last week against Middle Tennessee, marking his seventh straight game with over 100 yards on the ground. That is the longest active streak by a running back in the nation. Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch has hit the century mark in eight straight games. The WKU record for consecutive 100 yard games is eight, set by Antwan Floyd in a stretch covering the 1994 and 1995 season, and equaled by Bobby Rainey over the 2010 and 2011 campaigns. During his seven-game 100-yard streak, Andrews is averaging 141 yards per game, and has scored all seven of his rushing touchdowns.
