BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With over 1,000 all-purpose yards through the first five games of the season, WKU running back Antonio Andrews has found himself among some elite company, as the junior ranks second in the nation in all-purpose yards per game (213.0), which has him in the running for the 2012 Paul Hornung Award.
The Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in college football. Despite not being among the 48 players selected to the preseason watch list, Andrews has worked his way onto the list after a week three performance against Kentucky. In that particular game, Andrews piled up 233 all-purpose yards, to go along with three rushing touchdowns and threw the game-winning pass on a two-point conversion in overtime.
With Andrews' selection to the Paul Hornung Award list, the Fort Campbell, Ky., native is now part of an online fan vote, in which fans can visit www.votepaulhornung.com to place their votes for the running back as the most versatile player in the country. The winner of the fan vote receives one total vote that is added to the 16 possible votes from the 16-member committee at the end of the year.
For the 2012 season, Andrews has piled up over 200 all-purpose yards in four of the first five games of the season, including over 700 combined all-purpose yards over the last three weeks. Andrews currently leads WKU in rushing yards (542), receiving yards (235), punt return yards (115) and kick return yards (173).
The former Mr. Football winner in the state of Kentucky has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week twice in the first five weeks of the season, and has earned a mention by the College Football Performance Awards on four different occasions.
About the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse Created by the Louisville Sports Commission in 2010, the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award is designed to promote college football and help preserve the legacy of one of Kentucky's best-known and accomplished athletes who has always called Louisville home. Hornung, the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame and NFL MVP for the Green Bay Packers, set a single season NFL scoring record that stood 46 years. Hornung is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, and Vince Lombardi once called Hornung, "The most versatile man ever to play the game." A national selection committee comprised of 16 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 17th vote. All votes are tabulated independently by regional accounting firm Dean Dorton Allen Ford. The winner is honored at a banquet presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine in early February in downtown Louisville.
