BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University volleyball team returns to action Tuesday against Tennessee State at E.A. Diddle Arena. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be the final home match for WKU before beginning Sun Belt Conference play.
WKU (9-1) went 3-0 over the weekend on its way to the WKU Tournament title, played at E.A. Diddle Arena. With wins over Xavier, Wake Forest and LSU, the Lady Toppers have won six straight matches and are ranked No. 31 by the AVCA.
The Lady Toppers are led by junior outside hitter Jordyn Skinner, who earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors after being named the Most Valuable Player of the WKU Tournament. Skinner finished the week with 80 kills, 5.71 per set, a .321 hitting percentage, 50 digs, 3.57 per set, and 13 total blocks.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., native recorded double-digit kills in each of WKU's four matches on the week. In the three matches over the weekend, Skinner totaled 70 kills, an average of 6.36 per set with a .346 hitting percentage. Skinner has recorded seven double-doubles in 10 matches this season.
Tennessee State is off to a 4-2 start in the young season. The Tigers are most recently coming off a 2-1 showing at the Bear Brawl hosted by Mercer. TSU opened the tournament with victories over Norfolk State (3-0) and Mercer (3-2) before falling to Troy (3-1) on Saturday.
For the second consecutive week Shaquita Williams and Terakka Walker were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts. Williams hit a scorching .455 and tallied 13 kills in the win over Norfolk State. She led the team with 18 kills, four digs and three service aces against Troy. Walker posted two double-doubles in the tournament. She registered 14 kills and 19 digs versus Mercer before notching 12 kills and 11 digs against Troy.
WKU leads the all-time series with Tennessee State 19-1 with a 13-1 record in Bowling Green, Ky. Last season, the two teams met in Nashville with the Lady Toppers coming away with a 3-0 sweep.
